25th March
2000 Media 2 EC appoints MEDIA 2 Development office Following the December withdrawal of EMDA from MEDIA 2, the EU's support programme for the audiovisual industry, the European Commission has appointed Media Assistance to manage the pre-selection of applications to the MEDIA Programme for development support. In contrast to the former system of London-based readers, Media Assistance will monitor and co-ordinate a European network of readers and experts that will be subdivided into linguistic and geographical zones as well as into types of support. This new approach aims to tap into a more diverse pool of expertise and take into account the market realities of the various EU Member countries as well as the production potential of submitted projects. Results of December Applications and Resubmission Procedures The assessment of applications submitted to MEDIA Development in December 1999 is now underway and the first reports from the new network of readers are expected by the end of March. Panels of experts will meet the Commission in early April to complete the selection process. As before, the panels will consist of key members of the European production and distribution sectors, maintaining a balance between the different countries participating in the MEDIA Programme. Results for the fiction and documentary projects submitted last December (and for companies who have submitted for both fiction and slate funding at the same time) will be announced before the next MEDIA Development deadline of 14 April 2000. Results for the other genres (animation, multimedia, slate funding, company loans and business plans) will be announced in May. Companies wishing to reapply with the same project at the 14 April deadline should do so by sending a fax confirming their resubmission accompanied by the first page of the application form, filled in, dated and signed. Companies resubmitting the same project may update their applications until 14 April 2000. Regarding applications for a business plan grant, there is no need to resubmit the same dossier (as it is an open call), but it can be updated until 14 April 2000. Any additional information sent to the European Commission is to be sent in triplicate. MEDIA Development 2000 Applications for MEDIA development for 14 April deadline should be sent directly to the European Commission at the usual address given in the Guidelines. Application forms and guidelines may be downloaded from the UK MEDIA website: http://www.mediadesk.co.uk.
